What is a Sustaining Member?

A committed individual who understands that the Harris County Democratic Party needs a healthy financial base from which to operate. Sustaining contributors make the day-to-day operation of our local Party possible (like payment of rent, telephones, Executive Director's salary, and the like).

Harris County is the third largest county in the nation (1788 square miles), and many dollars are required to fund our local Democratic Party.

HCDP represents all Democrats to the press and public. It maintains a database of Democratic voters and activists. It runs the primary elections - a huge undertaking in a county with over 4 million people. It encourages and assists our Democratic candidates for office. It disseminates information to our voters and encourages grassroots activities. In short, it conducts the official business of our Democratic Party here in Harris County.

Contributions are not tax deductible for federal income tax purposes. Federal law requires us to use our best efforts to collect and report the name, mailing address, occupation, and name of employer for any person whose contributions exceed $200 in a calendar year. Your contribution may be used in connection with federal elections and is subject to the limitations and prohibitions of the Federal Election Campaign Act.

Federal law prohibits our federal PAC from receiving contributions from the general treasury funds of a corporation, labor organization, national bank, or an entity or person who is a federal contractor, or from anyone who is not a United States citizen or a permanent resident alien. If the contributor is under 18 years old, we cannot accept the contribution unless the decision to contribute was knowingly and voluntarily made by the contributor himself or herself from funds owned and controlled by the contributor, and not made from a gift given to the minor for the purpose making the contribution.
